Water loss and Non-Revenue Water (NRW) are major challenges for water utilities worldwide. Improving network efficiency requires effective strategies for leak detection, pressure management, infrastructure monitoring and accurate flow measurement.
These topics will take center stage at WaterLoss Asia 2026, the tenth edition of the international event organized by PROTEMP Exhibitions & Conferences and supported by the International Water Association (IWA). The event will be held October 20–22, 2026, at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Understanding Non-Revenue Water
Non-Revenue Water (NRW) refers to water supplied to a distribution network that does not generate revenue for the utility because it is lost, not properly accounted for, or not billed.
The IWA standard water balance identifies three main components:
- Unbilled authorized consumption — legitimately supplied water that is not billed, such as water used for firefighting or public institutions.
- Apparent losses — water that is delivered but not accurately accounted for because of meter inaccuracies, unauthorized connections or billing data errors.
- Real losses — physical water losses caused by leaks and pipe breaks in pipelines, tanks and service connections.
Strategies for reducing water loss
Effective NRW management combines several complementary approaches, including:
- Active leakage control to identify leaks before they become visible.
- Pressure management to reduce and stabilize network pressure.
- Infrastructure management to support targeted maintenance and renewal of critical assets.
- Speed of repair to minimize the time between leak detection and intervention.
Another key approach is the division of water networks into District Metered Areas (DMAs). These hydraulically isolated areas use dedicated flow measurement to help utilities identify sectors with higher NRW levels and monitor network performance. Accurate flow measurement is therefore an important element in water loss management.
